11+ Preparation

11+ Preparation – Years 4 and 5
Give your child the advantage of high-quality 11+ preparation, taught by a former Head of Maths at one of the UK’s top grammar schools.
With 20 years of teaching experience, including a decade as Head of Maths, I’ve spent years working directly with the kind of students who thrive in selective schools. I’ve also written and marked 11+ exams myself, so I understand exactly what is expected.

This means I’m uniquely placed to prepare your child for the challenges of the 11+ — not just by teaching exam technique, but by developing the depth of understanding, reasoning, and resilience needed to excel.

My small group classes are:
-
Well-structured and challenging — tailored to stretch bright learners
-
Focused on key skills — covering all major KS2 curriculum areas
-
Rich in problem-solving — so students can handle the unexpected
-
Supportive and motivating — helping children grow in confidence every week
📅 Now enrolling for Year 4 and Year 5 courses starting September 2026.

How to get started
-
Get in touch
Please share a few details about your child, including their current year group, school, and any relevant information. -
Initial discussion (optional)
If helpful, we can arrange a short call (10–15 minutes) to answer any questions and discuss your child’s needs. -
First lesson
Your child attends a one-off lesson (£30). This allows them to experience how I teach and gives me the opportunity to assess their approach and recommend a suitable group. -
Securing a place
If you would like to continue, a £30 registration fee is payable to secure a place. This is deducted from your first half-term invoice. -
Joining the programme
Your child is added to their group and provided with access to lesson notes and homework via Google Classroom. Students also benefit from additional support throughout the year, including optional holiday workshops, access to carefully designed mock examinations written by a former 11+ examiner with detailed feedback, and the option of targeted one-to-one support where needed.
Places are limited and allocated on a first-come basis.

Advice from a former 11+ maths examiner
What I’ve noticed: Recently, I have been approached by a number of parents asking for my help. Their concerns centre on tuition centres and individual tutors merely setting mock 11+ questions for their tutees to work through. There is, of course, a place for practice questions. However, part of why tutors take this approach is because they have no real experience of what is involved in setting and assessing the 11+ test. Moreover, schools hardly ever release past papers; consequently, such tutors and centres have to rely on sample questions from websites, guides, workbooks etc.

Merely being taught how to answer these particular questions is insufficient to teach you the necessary maths that is required for students to think for themselves in the real 11+ exams. This is the crux of the issue: there is no one style of eleven plus test paper; it can change substantially from year to year. The fundamental aim of the test is to assess a student’s aptitude and ability to cope with unfamiliar questions with which they will be faced. It is essential, therefore, that they have the mathematical knowledge which will help them to rise to the challenge.

Test questions and mock exams are certainly necessary to build confidence and time management skills, especially towards the end of a committed period of time learning maths, but nothing comes close to a thorough background in maths to act as a springboard for success in the 11+ test.
I take the approach of teaching my students the fundamentals of maths and enjoy developing their problem solving skills over a period of time. Join one of my 11+ preparation classes for a thorough grounding for the test and beyond.
What I’ve noticed: There seem to be many tutors and centres offering area and school-specific tuition. This encourages the mistaken belief amongst some parents that it is possible to provide such tuition.
To be clear from the outset, unless the person offering the tuition is actually the question-setter there is no way they could know the precise style or content of a future 11+ test. If they do, this would represent a conflict of interest at the very least. That is why, when choosing a tutor, it is important to understand how the system operates.
ALL 11+ Maths papers test Key Stage 2 skills. However, they are written to the selective standard. And only I/other former exam writers and grammar school teachers can possibly know what that is - thus one should be wary of unqualified tutors offering tailored tuition or mock tests for a particular school or area.
